SPORT NEWS TIPS email@example.com GREYHOUND RACING 43 Damsels set to dash again at Tara Raceway OntheLure with DAVID LEWIS e FOLLOWING a break of four years, the Damsels Dash will return to Tara Raceway’s feature race calendar next month. For the best eight greyhound bitches nominated, the Damsels Dash will be run over 512 metres on Sunday, May 18. The popular bitches-only races had previously been sponsored by Bushfi eld identity Jim Williams but had not been run since his death in early 2011. This year’s event will carry a stud service to former Victorian chaser Hutmaker, a son of Premier Fantasy and Beekeeper. Donated by leading Victorian trainer Robert Britton, Hutmaker raced on 62 occasions for 17 wins and 27 minor placings. A winner of more than $117,000 in prizemoney, the black dog was runner-up in the 2011 Group 2 Launching Pad and 2012 Canberra Cup. The last Damsels Dash to be run at Tara Raceway was back in May 2010 when Cap Abbott’s former top chaser White Arrow defeated the Cass Billington trained But White by eight lengths in 30.49 seconds. White Arrow, which went on to win 25 races and more than $60,000 in prizemoney, has one of her pups in Flashy Arrow engaged in today’s Anzac Cup (512m). Thanks go to the ever-obliging track photographer Todd Nicholson who was able to delve into his archives and come up with the presentation shot of Abbott and White Arrow. The previous year, the Damsels Dash had been won by Magic Elite, a bitch raced by four local workmates in Jack Peacock, Robert Chuck, Ken Gillespie and Stephen (Bart) Bartholomew, and trained by the latter. Magic Elite led all the way to score an easy win over Nice And Norty in a best of day 30.35 seconds. Purchased by the group following a maiden win at Horsham, Magic Elite won a further six races before litters to Scull Murphy, Collision, Velocette and Fabregas. One of her offspring in Galactic Impact looks a good chance in today’s Poziers DASHING DAMSEL: Owner-trainer Cap Abbott pictured with White Arrow after winning the Williams Damsels Dash at Tara Raceway in 2010. Mixed Stake (512m). And without wishing to second-guess trainers, a glance at today’s fi elds would suggest there are plenty of handy bitches around to tackle next month’s Damsels Dash, not the least being Thanks Tubby, Irish Angel, Striking Viking, Our Nipper and Manila Express – to name but a few. Another 512 metre bitches-only feature has been programmed for September. To be known as the Queens Quality, the race will carry a service to Galba Jack, runner-up to Dyna Lachlan in the 2010 Australian Cup. Looking for change of luck KEEP Looking also was a damsel with plenty of dash. And Tarpeena breeder Allen Williams will be hoping for better luck after the blue bitch missed last year at her fi rst mating. This time Williams has opted for the Queensland sire Glen Gallon, a son of US greyhound Flying Stanley out of Incoherent, a daughter of leading sire Bombastic Shiraz. Dowdell, who served in Borneo during World War II, will be celebrating his birthday at Tara Raceway’s Anzac Day meeting. And he’ll be celebrating in style if Yard Duty can win race four, the Ypres grade six fi nal over 400 metres. The black bitch found plenty of early trouble from box six in her heat last Sunday but ran home well to fi nish fourth and grab a spot in the fi nal. Yard Duty last won for Dowdell at Tara Raceway back in January when successful in a maiden event. Breeding on the rise FIGURES released this week by Greyhound Racing SA have highlighted a rise in the number of litters bred. In 2011/12, 77 litters were registered and while the next 12 months revealed little change, 2013/14 has so far seen the number rise to 92 with the SA Bred Incentives Scheme obviously playing a big part in the SA breeding resurgence. However, with more SA bred greyhounds now winning TAB races the pool of money is being shared more broadly which means the returns are reducing accordingly. GRSA racing manager, Shaun Mathieson, said this week that the $30,000 monthly pool for breeding bonuses had not been increased since July 2011. He said an increase would be considered as part of the 2014-15 stakemoney strategy. The increase in breeding is good news for the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club which is to introduce age-restricted classics. The fi rst of these will be the Winter Classic, to be run in August, and expected to carry $3000 in prizemoney. for prizemoney of almost $620,000 – the second highest in Australia. By Where’s Pedro out of outstanding producer Keep Token, Keep Looking also raced 71 times for 11 wins. The versatile chaser won from 400 metres at Tara Raceway to 600 metres at Angle Park with one of her most signifi cant wins being in a heat of the 2012 Mount Gambier Cup (512m) when she defeated Rouse Flyer.
