34 greyhounds DAVID LEWIS ALLENDALE East-trained greyhound, Thanks Tubby brought up her fourth win from only five starts at Tara Raceway when scoring a brilliant 29.94 seconds win in last Friday’s Anzac Cup (512 metres). Quickly away from box seven, the black bitch led all the way and on the line had three lengths to spare over the fast finishing Sir Lenny with a further quarter length back to Piper’s Pick which ran a terrific race to finish third. Owned at Churchable in Queensland by Jake O’Rourke, Thanks Tubby is trained by David Peckham of the Bourne Racing Kennels who took over the daughter of Superman and Irish Fantasy in February after she had won only a maiden race at Ipswich last September. Prior to last Friday’s feature success, Thanks Tubby had been successful in the Allestree Holiday Units grade five feature and Peckham now has the forthcoming Damsels Dash (512m) as one of his options. Following a record nomination of 12 greyhounds for the meeting, Peckham also was successful earlier in the day with Black Linen in the Fromelles Stake (400m). Runner-up to Benara Cosmic in the Sims Memorial early in the year, Black Linen had been off the scene for a couple of months due to injury. But the black bitch was spot on for last Friday’s grade six event and quickly found the front from box seven before racing away for a two length win over Eumeralla Boss in a tidy 23.39 seconds. “Hopefully we can keep the feature race success rolling because Black Linen is now eligible for this Sunday’s Gambier Vets added money grade five over 400 metres,” Peckham said. As an aside, Clarissa Miller, granddaughter of Bourne Racing Kennels partner Connie Miller, was on track to enjoy Thanks Tubby’s special win on a special day. “I’m going to relocate to Allendale East and help out Nanna and David at the kennels when I’m 16,” said 13-year-old Clarissa, who currently lives in Adelaide and is also the granddaughter of another local stalwart in Noel Miller. Fittingly, the Anzac Cup was presented to Peckham by World War II veteran, Ivor Dowdell, of Yahl. Dowdell, who turned 92 on Anzac Day, is still a licensed greyhound trainer and had Yard Duty engaged earlier in the day. And in a nice gesture, the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club supplied a birthday cake to mark the occasion. Jackpot: VIsIT us onLIne borderwatch.com.au Thanks Tubby continues outstanding run The Cass Billington trained Westlake Prinz is back in the form that saw him reach this year’s Mount Gambier Cup final. By Talk’s Cheap out of Miss Cupido – which was a 2008 cup finalist for Billington – Westlake Prinz bounced back to winning form on Easter Sunday when he held out smart type Dimora Stringer. Westlake Prinz then quickly found the front from box eight in last Friday’s Poziers Mixed Stake (512m) and was much too good for a classy field when clocking a smart 30.17 seconds. “I’ll probably now look at giving him a few runs at Warrnambool over 450 metres in conjunction with Sunday meetings here,” said Billington in regard to the black and white dog’s forthcoming commitments. A day of highlights ALSO highlighting the day was the run of the Cap Abbott trained Manila Express in the Lone Pine Stake (512m). The beautifully bred daughter of Bekim Bale and Flossy led all the way to score a brilliant win over Our Nipper and Murf’s Angel in an equal best of the day 29.94 seconds. And all three placegetters look to be in the running for a crack at the forthcoming Damsels Dash for bitches which will be run on Sunday, May 18. “She’s always hard to beat if she can find the front,” Manila Express’s Edenhope-based trainer said. The win followed a smart win at Angle Park recently when the black bitch clocked 29.81 seconds for the 515 metre journey. “I’ve got her in over 600 metres ANZAC CUP: Clarissa (left) and Connie Miller and David Peckham with Thanks Tubby, winner of last Friday’s Anzac Cup at Tara Raceway. Slipper shows his might in two-dog war THE other feature event of the day was the Anzac Sprint. It looked to be a terrific race and that’s how it turned out when Slipper’s Might and Arbour Elvis staged a stirring battle in the 400 metre event. Slipper’s Might was having his first run over the distance since establishing a track record 22.93 seconds when defeating Rouse Flyer late last month. And Arbour Elvis, a kennelmate of Rouse Flyer, had given that dog a fright at the previous meeting when running him to a length in a 400 metre Free For All. Trained at Glenroy by Richard Clayfield, Slipper’s Might, despite not being drawn well in box two, quickly found the front in the Anzac Sprint but allowed Barry Shepheard’s Arbour Elvis enough room to soon rail through and take the lead. $61.52 Exacta: $34.90. But the record holder dug deep in the concluding stages of the race and had a half length to spare on the line with Ben Boers’ Flame Flight filling third spot in a winning time of 23.48 seconds. Slipper’s Might has now had 14 starts for five wins for Clayfield, who took over the black dog from part-owner and breeder Barry Jones of McLaren Vale in January. By Lochinvar Marlow out of Slipper’s Tonic, the 28 kilogram dog is a litter brother to star chaser Ernie Bung Arrow, the 2013 SA Greyhound of the Year. Such have been the deeds of Ernie Bung Arrow that Slipper’s Tonic’s second litter (to Cosmic Rumble) has seen Jones place a $5000 price tag on her dog pups. Greyhound results Quinella: $28.50. Winning form continues YAZZ and Westlake Prinz, both good winners at Tara Raceway on Easter Sunday, followed up with even more impressive performances last Friday. Yazz, owned and trained by Luke Harris, had scored a good win in his grade six heat over 400 metres to give his Somerville trainer his first winner at the track. The son of Collision had been expected to improve at his second look at the track but following an average start in Friday’s final his hopes looked slim when he found himself well back and noted speedster Norma’s Moment looking comfortable out in front. In fact, keen judges rated the effort of Yazz, a giveaway greyhound, one of the biggest 400 metre runs they had ever seen at the track when the brindle dog ultimately stormed home to get up by a half length and give the Harris family a couple of memorable visits to Tara Raceway. at Angle Park on Monday (last night) and from box one hopefully she can find the front and give them something to catch.” Compton trainer Tracie Price book-ended the meeting with Hickleton and West On Ziggy. Hickleton, another one of the Lochinvar Marlow x Penny La Plume litter, finally broke through when leading all the way for his first win at start number 17 in the Mount Gambier RSL Open Maiden Stake (512m). And for owners Ken Monaghan, Joe Price and Ray Hickleton the win couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. “To be honest, I was ready to sack him,” Price said. “I’d told the boys that if he didn’t win today then he would have to be moved on.” West On Ziggy wrapped up the Anzac Day meeting in fine style when leading all the way in the Somme Stake (400m). Well drawn in box one, the former WA chaser, following some recent consistent performances at Tara Raceway, finally broke through for his first win since August last year when successful at Mandurah.
