48 GREYHOUNDS OntheLure with DAVID LEWIS e MIDDLE distance racing over 600 metres is on track to commence at Tara Raceway in the latter part of next month. Kick-starting the new distance will be the Premier Boloney Super Challenge which besides carrying a service to the beautifully bred son of Premier Fantasy and Miss Mini Mouse will also include added prizemoney. Owned by former Pioneers basketballer Ben Riddle, who has come on board as a club sponsor, Premier Boloney won 23 races and more than $170,000 in prizemoney. And not only was he a top sprinter, the black dog also excelled over the middle distance, winning at Ballarat, The Meadows, Sandown Park and Sale. Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club secretary/treasurer, Barry Shepheard, said this week the introduction of 600 metre racing would be another exciting stage in the development of Tara Raceway with the club striving to cater for all types of greyhounds. “There’s been plenty of interest in the new distance,” he said. “It will give owners and trainers another option with their greyhounds and should boost our nominations even further. “The starting boxes, which were gifted by Greyhound Racing Victoria, are now in place and the relevant fencing work has been completed. “There’s still work to be done in regard to power being connected, matting for the front of the boxes and the spreading of additional sand but I’m confi dent we’ll be far enough advanced to kick off with the Premier Boloney next month.” Shepheard said there would need to be six VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au Major projects on track at Tara Middle distance racing nears Access to the slipping track would be by way of a key holder system whereby for a small annual fee stakeholders would have virtual unlimited use of the facilities. Shepheard said the club had been very grateful of a Greyhound Racing SA grant which had helped to fund both the 600 metre set-up and the slipping track. Breeders’ busy time TRACIE Price and partner Karen Van Der Laan, of Compton, are being kept pretty busy at the moment following the whelping of Natural Queen and Devil Moon litters. Natural Queen whelped one dog and four bitches to Adelaide Cup winner Kilty Lad (Superman x Sisco Train), a winner of more than $260,000 in stakes. From her first mating (to Spooks A Robber), Natural Queen produced the speedy Natural Moment which was a winner at Mount Gambier, Strathalbyn and Gawler. By Big Daddy Cool, Natural Queen is a daughter of Natural Class which traces back to the fabulous Lenehan line of Hoppy’s Star and Hoppy’s Girl. And a quick look at today’s fi elds would suggest greyhounds such as Maccaboy, Galactic Impact, And Away and Chilly Patch would be ideally suited to the new distance. Meanwhile, work continues at the Lake Terrace East venue on the slipping track which is also likely to be completed by the end of next month. Situated in an area behind the back straight, this fully fenced section will give trainers the opportunity of free galloping their dogs in complete safety. Almost 200 metres in length, the track was graded last week while sand for the surface is due to be delivered early next week. Fencing contractor Billy Leggett has commenced work on the inside fencing and gates. “Many tracks around Australia have now built slipping tracks,” Shepheard said. “They allow for people living in built up areas to become actively involved in the training of greyhounds. “We will be the only SA track to offer these facilities and we’re hoping it might encourage people with an interest in the sport to become actively involved. Also, it could be a way of rekindling the interest of some former participants.” Tara Raceway, Mount Gambier Race 1 *First 4* 1–78 KENNETT’S CURSE Raymond Keating 2–6 BLACK WOOL 3–8773 STETSON BLUE AZ Brian Weis 4–7676 STAR ZIPPY 5–7622 ABBY’S ANGEL 6– 7–5656 CEE PORT Bernard Rogers Ivor Dowdell BOWEN RAIDER Brian Weis Kenneth Gillespie Andrew Graham 8–846 BULL BAR MAISIE Anthony Harding 12.57pm THE BORDER WATCH OPEN MAIDEN STAKE $545, $160, $80, 400m Best time 24.85 NBT 23.89 24.75 23.82 NBT 24.03 24.78 SELECTIONS: Stetson Blue Az, Abby’s Angel, Bowen Raider, Kennett’s Curse.
