Played in three separate grades, the tournament was sponsored by South East Pine Sales. All rounds were complemented by some beautiful autumn weather and the final 18-holes was contested last Wednesday when MGGC women’s captain, Marie Douglas thanked all participants and tournament spectators. A grade NEW CHAMPIONS: The newly crowned Mount Gambier Golf Club’s women’s strokeplay champions for 2014 (from left) Maxine McGregor (B grade), Julie Oldfield (A) and Kate McCourt (C). JULIE Oldfield clinched her MGGC A grade title after a dominant final round broke the deadlock she was in with Jennifer van Rijthoven. The pair were playing partners in the final round and hit off with scores tied. Eighteen holes later, Oldfield had a 10 stroke winning margin. Van Rijthoven was somewhat unlucky to incur a penalty stroke on the first hole which added to her challenge and at the turn of 9-holes, she trailed by three shots. Oldfield tackled the homeward nine with gusto and won convincingly with a 54-hole total of 257. The handicap title – also played over 54-holes – saw victory go the way of Mel Bawden, posting 228 nett and eight shots clear of both Oldfield and Rijthoven. B grade MAXINE McGregor is a former winner of B grade in previous years and played some steady golf over the three rounds to take out another title. HANDICAP CHAMPIONS (from left): Maxine McGregor (B grade), Mel Bawden (A) and Gloria Lennon (C). McGregor finished six strokes clear of upcoming golfer, Kerry Pedlar who is a former topline hockey player and now concentrating on running marathons. McGregor set up her overall win with a second round 96 compared to Pedlar’s 101. The handicap title also went to McGregor, finishing with 233 nett, six strokes clear of both Karen Forster and Marie Douglas. C grade DESPITE getting her championships off to a shocking start, Kate McCourt recovered to win C grade by the barest of margins. McCourt started with a score of 115 and trailed Gloria Lennon by 12 strokes and Libby Altschwager by six with a further three players also in front of her. But a strong fightback in Round 2 with 96 compared to Lennon’s 109 and Altschwager’s 110 took McCourt from sixth place to outright leader, albeit by only stroke. Paired together in the final round, McCourt and Lennon were embroiled in a great tussle and matched each other shot-for-shot, both firing 108s. Lennon received some conso- A GRADE TRIFECTA (from left): Mel Bawden (3rd), Julie Oldfield (1st) and Jennifer Van Rijthoven (2nd). lation by winning the handicap championship, one stroke ahead of Isobel Phillips.
