Playing away to Gambier City Sharks held no fears for Apollo as it cruised to a 5-0 win and the result ensured it kept pace with the top two teams, Centrals and International. Apollo 5 d Sharks 0 APOLLO were good from the outset and rarely gave Sharks a look-in whenever the home side did gain possession of the ball. Jake Blackwell hit some great form and found the back of the net twice, while joining him on the scoresheet were teammates, Gavin Hancock, Chris Bytheway and Luke McCallum. One downside to Apollo’s victory was the yellow card issued to Josh Reader who ironically suffered the same fate when he played in the curtain raiser reserves game. International 4 d Millicent 2 MILLICENT started in whirlwind fashion when Matt Grgetic scored a goal within a minute of the starting whistle. But United’s start only served to sting International into action and it didn’t take long before Will Circelli produced a near perfect cross to Matt Bueti who successfully converted the equaliser. Shortly after Bueti had another shot goal only to be denied by the Millicent keeper. However the deflection was quickly snapped up by International’s Tom Weedon who put the visitors 2-1 in front. Millicent replied with a fast paced attack at goal but were unable to penetrate the defence of Alex Sims and goalkeeper, Brayden May. International had another chance to score when Sam Bueti received a long ball and cut back to Matt Bueti who volleyed but again the ball was intercepted by the Millicent keeper. More chances followed for International, but no further score was added in the first half. After a rousing half time speech by visiting coach, Tony D’Agostino, a more determined International side took to the field. The Millicent goalkeeper again deflected a powerful attack from the left by Sam WESTERN Border Soccer Association Round 5 results (May 25): Seniors: Centrals 2 dw Blue Lake 2. Bueti while Marcus Morony worked hard for International but was denied a penalty when he was tackled in the 18 yard box. International were again unlucky when a short free kick by Matt Weistra to Sam Bueti resulted in a shot at goal which hit the upright. The corner kick which ensued also hit the post before International finally added to its score when Tom Weedon headed the ball in for his second goal and his team’s third. However Millicent continued to capitalise on some inaccurate passing and were able to score its second when a defensive error saw the ball – kicked by Drew Agnew – bounce past Brayden May. Millicent attempted to equal- ise but Ricky McRobert and Matt Morony were too strong in the International backline and then the result was sealed when Christian Cella kicked the visitor’s fourth goal. Centrals 2 dw Blue Lake 2 CENTRALS started the game with a big loss to its backline with Mitchell Cutting starting on the bench due to injury. This resulted in a call-up to Justin Gysbers to play as goalkeeper. There was plenty of intent from both teams early before a penalty going in favour of the Lions with Jayden Breuker taken down in the box. Thomas Renzi made sure of the opportunity to put Centrals in front and the Lions held the 1-0 buffer till half time. Blue Lake started the better upon resumption and the equaliser came through Sam Johnston. As the game wore on, Centrals regained the lead through a goal from Lewis March and the Lions looked set to hold on the for win. Late in the match, Blue Lake tied scores up again when Tristan Guess produced the goods to help cause the upset of the round, holding Centrals to a 2-2 draw.
