SPorT nEWS TiPS firstname.lastname@example.org junior golf 29 region’s juniors swamp Henley stars ROD MORRIS GOLF South East’s burgeoning Junior Academy has clinched its second challenge title against the famed Henley High School’s specialist sport golf squad. Played at both the Mount Gambier and Millicent golf courses recently, the GSE Academy flexed its muscles to win 11-6 overall. Henley High School is a specialist in offering a wide range of sports to aspiring juniors. NO. 1: Caleb Perry suffered a loss against Henley’s Liam Kennewell but won his Pinehurst foursomes match with Jackson Bawden. Many country juniors have made their way to Henley, taking up the opportunity of combining their schooling with their sporting passion. The tournament was split over two days with the opening round featuring 11 individual matchplay games and Round 2 consisting of six Pinehurst matchplay challenges. In a slight twist from normal matchplay conditions, each game was played out to the full 18-holes regardless of the number of holes won that determine an earlier finish. Both the GSE Academy and Henley squads boasted players with state level experience and the standard of golf was above expectations. NO. 2: Mount Gambier’s Jhett Perry had a win and a loss. Day 1 saw GSE jump to a commanding lead, winning seven of the 11 matches, while Matthew Morgan was held to a draw by Jamie Smith. Among the more impressive winners were Sam Bond (6-up), Jhett Perry (5-up) and Ben Robinson (5-up). GSE coaches shuffled the academy players around somewhat for the Pinehurst foursomes on Day 2 with star Mount Gambier junior, Caleb Perry teamming with NO. 7: Bronson Mahony bounced back from losing his singles, to partner Carly Graetz to victory in the Pinehurst foursomes. NO. 4: Millicent’s Harry Coote was one of three undefeated players in the Golf South East junior team. NO. 8: Ben Robinson won his singles and drew in the Pinehurst foursomes. the in-form Jackson Bawden to play in the No. 1 role. Perry and Bawden worked well together to defeat their Henley opponents, Jordan Black and Aaron Buchanan 1-up. Bronson Mahony and Carly Graetz were in cruise control in their match against Jakob Soderholm and Morgan Pfitzner, while Matthew Morgan and Millicent’s Harry Coote combined for a 1-up win over Liam Kennewell and Mitch Rogerson. GSE won 3½ of the six Pinehurst matches to claim an 11-6 victory overall. The challenge inaugurated in 2012 when GSE clinched the maiden title, but Henley bounced back in 2013 to square the ledger. With GSE now back in front, attention will turn to 2015 when Henley will host the challenge at the Adelaide based, Grange Golf Club.
