Cr Maher said the high obesity levels also could be linked to the city’s extensive low socioeconomic demographic figures. Regarding the OPAL program, he said the project had made some inroads in Mount Gambier through project work and awareness initiatives. He said some of its achievements included the initiation of the community park development at Hayes Crescent and the popular Blue Lake Fun Run. Conceding council could not afford the $300,000 annual price tag to keep the project going, he said a project in some form must continue. “Even though it is not a traditional local government responsibility, it is too important for us … we need to capitalise and build on the work of OPAL,” Cr Maher said. He said council would hold an informal workshop to discuss the issue. Council community services and development manager Barbara Cernovskis said in a report to council that it appeared federal funding for preventative health would be terminated. She said this funding would impact on the OPAL program. “There still remains a high degree of uncer- OBESITY WORRY: Personal trainer Robert Dowdy and his wife Amber are devastated to hear the news of Mount Gambier’s high obesity levels. She said the South Australian Local Government Association had taken the lead to provide guidance to the State Government on possible alternatives. Ms Cernovskis said university evaluations regarding the OPAL program in Mount Gambier were due to be released shortly. Regarding a future without OPAL, she said council had created a number of health-related initiatives such as park and stride, outdoor learning and play spaces, the rail land redevelopment, community fruit trees as well as the delivery of community events. $169 Real estate hot spot emerges From front page Worklight 2 x 500W globes. 7070522 $1040 EACH View our latest catalogue at bunnings.com.au bunnings.com.au Not all services and products featured are available in all stores, but products may be ordered. REISA president Ted Piteo said the figures were sourced from the Valuer General’s median house price data for the March 2014 quarter. He said the solid increase in the median price, coupled with strong sales, pointed to a continuing lift in the regional housing market. “Sixty more homes were sold in this quarter compared to the same period last year and this represents a fantastic 15.35pc increase,” Mr Piteo said. “Regional markets appear to have bounced back after a particularly tough few years.” He said the top selling suburbs in terms of recorded sales over the March quarter were Mount Gambier, Victor Harbor and Port Lincoln. Overall, he said the regional housing market recorded an impressive 5.77pc increase in the median house price in the 2014 March quarter when compared with the same period last year. He said there was also a 3pc increase in the median house price from the 2013 December quarter. The median price for the regional housing market sits at $275,000, which is the highest level recorded since March 2011.
