Flying support RFDS group donates $65,000 THE Mount Gambier Royal Flying Doctor Support Group has handed over a whopping $65,000 in proceeds from a year of fundraising. Last year’s fundraising tally marked a $10,000 increase on the previous year. Royal Flying Doctor Service state volunteer coordinator Debbie Adams thanked the Mount Gambier group members for their hard work. She said funds raised by the group would be used to purchase and outfit new planes. This year marks the third in which the RFDS has been named the most reputable nationwide charity. The Mount Gambier support branch hosted two major fundraising events in the past 12 months, with this year’s Dinner in the Drome event raising $10,700 and the 2013 golf day netting $7200. However, community support was broad throughout the year with $16,446 donated by service clubs, schools and other organisations and $8200 contributed by local businesses. Individual donations totalled $15,700, with donations being made by people who had used the RFDS or who had loved ones saved through the service. The RFDS remains a vital service in regional areas landing in the South East twice a day and its value is reflected in the contribution the community makes to the fundraising efforts of the local support group.
