2 NEWS SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: Social media worked to Mount Gambier resident Josh Young’s advantage as he is now one of 25 people in the running to win a $65,000 Holden Arcadia at the Superloop Adelaide 500 this afternoon. Mr Young familiarised himself with the vehicle at OG Roberts Holden yesterday ahead of the challenge which will require him to keep his hand on the vehicle the longest across the weekend. Primary Industries and Regions SA chief veterinary officer Mary Carr said there are a number of actions animal owners can take to reduce the adverse impact extreme heat can have on animal health and wellbeing. “Where possible make sure there is enough shade for your animals to seek shelter and protection from the blazing sun, with plenty of water supplied nearby,” Dr Carr said. “During high temperatures animals can drink up to double their normal intake so it’s important they have access to sufficient cool water.” She said if possible animals should be kept away from dams which may become boggy and a danger for any stock seeking water. “Large and clean drinking troughs should be used, as evaporation may make trough water become saline and undrinkable,” she said. Motorsport fanatic nudges towards win Online competition gives Mount Gambier man chance to win new Holden at Adelaide 500 Supercar event MOLLY YLOR molly@tbw.com.au MOTORSPORT enthusiast Josh Young will start a mentally-challenging journey at the Superloop today Adelaide 500 with the chance to win a Holden Arcardia literally in his hands. Competing as one of 25 people in the Kayo Sports car giveaway, Mr Young will be shaded from the scorching weekend heat but also banished from trackside action in his quest for the major prize. The person who keeps their hand on the car the longest will win the $65,000 Holden Acadia in the competition being held by online stream- ing service Kayo Sports. While he will miss viewing the racing, Mr Young said there was nothing stopping him from winning. “I am very determined to win and am definitely going to give it my best shot for sure,” he said. “I have some strategies in place that I think will get me over the line. “I am a shift worker so I hope being used to staying up late at night will work to my advantage.” Mr Young said he tends to enter a lot of competitions and saw this one while scrolling through Facebook. “This one just popped up and I thought I would give it a go,” he said. “It was just a good chance to win a nice car. “I follow a lot of motorsport stuff so I was bound to see it.” Nerves rushed through Mr Young’s body when hefound out he was selected. “I have been nervous ever since,” he said. “I think I am just really lucky. “To be selected from thousands, a one in 25 chance is pretty good odds really.” Mr Young said he is up for a challenge no matter how long it takes. “Apparently the worldrecord is 80 hours so I hope it does not take that long,” he said. “I really hope it does take that long but I am up for a challenge.” It will be ‘all hands on deck’ during scheduled 15 minute breaks every three hours, with competitors expected to flock to the toilets or to get a dose of caffeine. “Although I will not be able to see the cars racing I will still be able to hear them,” he said. “It will all be worth it if I win in the end.” Mr Young said only his hand is allowed to touch the car. “So you can not have a nap, lay down and have a sleep on your hand or anything like that,” Mr Young said. “Even though we are in the shade, I think it will still be pretty hot. “With the weather coming up I think it will be pretty tough.” Starting from 5pm today, Mr Young said his wife will be in Adelaide Saturday morning and told him he better still have his hand on the car. “In hot weather troughs should be inspected daily to make sure they are working properly.” Dr Carr said during extreme temperatures animals should be checked regularly to make sure they are coping with the heat. “Transport of animals both on and off the farm should be minimised during periods of extreme heat and livestock transporters should also have contingency plans in case of an unexpected breakdown, as suggested under the national guidelines for the movement of livestock,” she said. “Pet owners should also make sure animals have enough shade and water and consider keeping pets inside on hot days. Ice packs and wet towels can used to help cool them down.” ‘Coffee with a cop’ to increase engagement MOUNT Gambier Marketplace and the Mount Gambier Police have teamed up to host “Coffee with a Cop” in a bid to increase community engagement and provide an opportunity to build meaningful connections between local police and the city’s residents. The event invites residents to come along to the Mount Gambier Marketplace on the first Thursday of each month and share a complimentary coffee in the food court with police officers to discuss community issues. It also provides a unique opportunity for local residents to ask questions and get to know a more about their local officers and police work in Mount Gambier. “The Coffee with a Cop initiative gives people the opportunity to chat with their local police in an informal and relaxed environment to discuss community safety issues that matter to them,” Mount Gambier Police community liason officer, Sergeant Andy Stott said. “It is an innovative approach to connecting with our local community, opening up conversations with people who may be reluctant to attend a police station, but still have issues or information they would like to discuss. “We hope that Coffee with a Cop will allow community members to feel comfortable to ask questions, voice concerns or simply get to know our officers in a relaxed setting.” Regional growth talks in city IN BRIEF THE State Parliament’s Economic and Finance Committee is holding a public hearing regarding the Limestone Coast Regional Growth Strategy at Mount Gambier City Hall on March 27 from 9am to 1pm.
